The senator for Saint Martin was attacked at her home. “At gunpoint, I was held captive, tied up and gagged,” Annick Pétrus said on her Facebook page.

Several hooded individuals broke into the home of the Senator for Saint-Martin during the night between Tuesday and Wednesday in order to steal, according to a statement from the Basse-Terre Public Prosecutor’s Office, “various items and two vehicles at gunpoint”. The senator was tied up during the armed robbery but was not physically injured and was able to contact the gendarmerie once her attackers had left. Annick Pétrus said: “I went through moments of great uncertainty. By the grace of God, I am safe and sound today. Whilst this ordeal may have left a deep mark, my state of health is, fortunately, reassuring.” She also extended her sincerest thanks to the police, the National Gendarmerie and everyone who had shown her support and solidarity. For Annick Pétrus, this attack will not undermine her commitment to serving Saint Martin and its inhabitants. Enhanced security measures for the senator’s home, provided by the gendarmerie, have been put in place and will continue in the coming days, the Prefecture stated. An investigation has been launched into unlawful confinement and armed robbery. This latest incident has raised serious concerns about the growing sense of insecurity that appears to be taking hold in the territory, affecting both citizens and elected representatives.
