Have a great weekend on 8 May!
Entertainment, commemorations, creative workshops and sporting events will provide the highlight of this long weekend of 8 May. Here’s a small selection of events not to be missed for young and old alike…
A magical evening at Les Mets Tissés
The school of magic is putting on a show this Thursday 7 May, from 7.30pm to 9pm, at Les Mets Tissés in Hope Estate. Students from Enigmagie will take over the restaurant and perform close-up magic tricks at every table. Entry is free, but as tables are usually snapped up quickly, it’s best to book: 06 90 88 08 22.
Commemoration of 8 May
The ceremony commemorating the 81st anniversary of the Victory of 8 May 1945 will take place on Friday 8 May at 9.00 am in front of the war memorial, in the Collectivité gardens in Marigot, in the presence of local authorities.
Creative workshops for children
In partnership with the RM Art School, the SXM Hope association is organising a fun creative workshop to teach children (aged 8 to 12) how to create their own characters using paint, clay or paper. The next workshops will take place on Saturdays 9, 16, 23 and 30 May, from 1.30 pm to 4 pm, at Agrément. The workshops are free and all materials are provided. Registration: sxmhope97150@gmail.com or 06 90 43 38 16.
Sport for parishioners
Whilst May is the month of Europe, it is also the month of Mary… a fact that the parish of Saint-Martin de Tours never fails to celebrate each year. The 4th edition of the MKT, in partnership with the Saint-Martin Cycling Committee, will take place this Sunday 10 May. This short sporting challenge can be completed on foot or by bike. The start will be at 8am from the former Fort Louis hospital, finishing in the Galisbay car park. The message is clear: “Let’s share the road – together we’re better off”. It’s free, everyone can take part and, of course, wearing a helmet is compulsory for cyclists.
Tribute to Perrinon
To mark the National Day of Remembrance of the Slave Trade, Slavery and their Abolition, a ceremony organised by the Prefecture will be held on Sunday 10 May, from 9am to 11am, in front of the Marigot cemetery. Around forty children will be present to pay a special tribute to Auguste-François Perrinon. The first mixed-race Martinican to enter the École Polytechnique and a key figure in the emancipation of slaves, he is buried in Marigot cemetery. The children will lay a wreath on his grave. A first for Saint Martin, with great symbolic and educational significance.
