What is Europe doing for Saint Martin?

Since 2010, Europe has been celebrated throughout France in May, to honour the European Union and the thousands of projects it supports each year. 592 events are listed this year across France. In Saint-Martin, a morning of celebrations and discussions is planned for Saturday 9 May.

Whilst the month of May is dedicated to highlighting the European Union’s work, Saturday 9 May marks the highlight of the celebrations with Europe Day, which was established 40 years ago. The 2026 edition also marks the 40th anniversary of the blue star-studded flag and the European anthem. It is also the 40th anniversary of Spain and Portugal joining the European Union. The day will therefore be celebrated this year throughout France, and here in the region, in the spirit of continuity and European values. On the initiative of the Prefecture, a public meeting, open to all, will be held this Saturday 9 May from 9am to 12pm at Soualiga College in La Savane. The aim is to highlight the many ties that bind Saint Martin to the European Union, but also to facilitate discussion ‘among citizens of a European Union member state’. The morning’s programme includes: testimonials from local project leaders on the question “What is Europe doing for Saint-Martin?”, activities on the theme, a traditional breakfast, and the unveiling of a mural on the European Union and Saint-Martin created at the school. Information stands on the European Union, as well as on the European funds for which the territory is eligible, will also be open to the public.
