My Saint-Martin Flag: the workshops have begun
On Wednesday 27 May in Grand Case, the first “My Saint-Martin Flag” workshop took place. This participatory process aims to put the people of Saint-Martin at the heart of the process of designing their future flag.
Unique, idyllic, friendly: this is how participants in the first “My Saint-Martin Flag” workshop described their island. During this round-table discussion, the discussions centred on three main themes: “Who are we?”, “Symbols” and “Colours”. These were questions to which the Saint-Martinians present responded in order to determine the values, images and graphic elements they wish to see—or not see—associated with their identity. The discussions highlighted the territory’s multiculturalism, languages, diversity, hospitality, authenticity and resilience. Regarding symbols, participants suggested the idea of a tree to represent roots. Colours also sparked much discussion. Blue, for the sea and sky; yellow, for the sun; and white, for peace, were frequently mentioned. A limit of three colours was also proposed. Further workshops are planned to gather public feedback, on 29 May in Quartier d’Orléans, 3 June in Sandy Ground and 10 June in Marigot. The online consultation also remains open until 30 June. Following this initial phase, a set of specifications will be drawn up and a design competition will take place throughout August. After that, a consultative public vote will take place in October and the flag is expected to be officially adopted on 7 December, the anniversary of the referendum that made Saint Martin an overseas collectivity.
