A road accident occurred in the early hours of 24 May, at 12.15 am, on the RN7 near Sandy Ground. According to the investigation, a vehicle travelling from Baie Nettlé is believed to have struck five young people who were riding a scooter. The driver is reported to have overtaken a lorry and been blinded by the headlights of the scooters. In a state of shock, he immediately alerted the emergency services. Despite their rapid response, one of the young people died that same evening. The four other victims, who were seriously injured, were taken to the Louis-Constant Fleming Hospital. One of them was airlifted to Martinique, two others underwent surgery in Saint-Martin, whilst the fourth is reported to have suffered less serious injuries. After being interviewed by the police, the driver underwent alcohol and drug tests, which proved negative. An investigation is underway to determine the exact causes and circumstances of this tragedy.
