Cul-de-Sac Bay: mooring and anchoring prohibited
The Collectivité of Saint-Martin wishes to inform water users that sargassum barriers have been installed in Cul-de-Sac Bay. Anchoring and water sports are prohibited within the barriers’ path. Yacht owners are required to move their vessels before 11 September.
As part of the measures being taken to tackle Sargassum strandings, the Collectivité is to install two floating barriers in Cul-de-Sac Bay to intercept and divert the rafts. Barrier C1, 180 metres long, will be installed to the north of the bay, and barrier C2, 520 metres long, on the south-western shore. The barriers are arranged in a zigzag pattern and separated by a channel designed to allow boats to pass through.
In accordance with Order No. 2026DEB, swimming and water sports practised from the shore using beach equipment and unregistered craft are prohibited within the designated area. This prohibition applies to all vessels and to any person engaging in water sports, diving or fishing within the areas demarcated by the Collectivité. A channel has been marked out in the deepest part of the area to ensure safe passage for sailing boats and vessels with limited draught, and remains open to navigation. Access to the Cul-de-Sac jetty and the link to Pinel Islet are maintained. From 11 September 2026, any observed breach will result in legal proceedings against the perpetrators.
