Fish Day is celebrating its 24th edition
The sea took centre stage during the festivities on Sunday 7 June, to mark the 24th edition of Fish Day. Organised by the Collectivité de Saint-Martin, this festive and popular event, with free admission, took place in the Galisbay car park from 10am to 10pm and celebrated the island’s fishermen as well as the local maritime heritage.
Over the years, Fish Day has established itself as an unmissable event celebrating Saint Martin’s maritime heritage. The thirty or so stalls set up for the occasion offered a generous selection of seafood specialities: fried fish, fish fritters or fish in court-bouillon, grilled fish, conch, crab, snapper… all recipes rooted in local tradition and a source of pride for the territory. The event also carries a powerful message: to highlight the central role of fishermen in the island’s economy and culture, and to bring this heritage to life for new generations. Musical entertainment set the tone for the morning before the official speeches marked the symbolic highlight of the day.
Louis Mussington, President of the Collectivité, and Valérie Damaseau, Chair of the Culture Committee, both took the floor to pay tribute to the collective effort that made the event possible. Thanking the Department of Cultural Affairs, the Human Development Delegation and all the departments involved, Valérie Damaseau recalled the very essence of Fish Day: “It is a time for sharing. Sharing a meal, sharing love, sharing a smile — all of this is welcome here. ” Families enjoyed a dedicated children’s play area and entertainment throughout the afternoon. Dance performances preceded an evening concert featuring several local artists, bringing the event to a festive close.
