Originally from Quartier d’Orléans, Daniel Defoe is passionate about football, and refereeing in particular. A regional referee in Occitanie, he aims to climb the ranks and put his home region on the map at the highest level.

Refereeing: more than a passion, it’s a way of life. At just 21 years old, Daniel Defoe juggles his time between the classroom and the football pitch. Like many of his peers, this Saint-Martin native started out as a player. Whilst acting as an assistant referee during a match, he discovered the joys of the role. “From that day on, I developed a taste for refereeing,” enthuses the student.
At 16, Daniel undertook referee training and made his official debut in the Saint Martin league. He then left the territory to study, continuing his career in Martinique and later in mainland France. As a business student, he referees every weekend in the regional league and at university matches. It’s a demanding activity that shapes his life: “Over time, I’ve really dedicated my body and my attention to this role. It requires a lot of discipline, psychological insight and kindness.” Qualities that the referee can apply to his everyday life: “It has helped me develop my character, the way I communicate with people on a daily basis, but also my powers of observation.”
To continue improving, Daniel undertakes theoretical training every year as well as physical tests. Far from being a mere spectator, in football the referee must be at the heart of the action. “I can cover up to 11 km in 90 minutes during matches,” explains the young man from Saint-Martin. A physical demand that requires two to three training sessions a week and a level of commitment rare for his age. “Most of the time, referees are more from my parents’ generation,” he says.
Recently, Daniel reached a milestone by taking part in an international tournament in Portugal. The event brought together academies from professional clubs such as Manchester City, Barcelona and Benfica. Out of 130 referees, he was selected to referee one of the finals. A memorable experience that has strengthened the Saint-Martin native’s ambitions, and he hopes one day to join CONCACAF. “It’s all done step by step, based on performance and observations,” he explains. For now, the referee is dreaming big and hopes to become a national referee and, one day, a professional, in order to put his island in the spotlight at the highest level.
