60% of the population receives social security benefits
The latest figures published by the Regional Institute for Statistics and Economic Studies (ITSEE) show that 18,760 people are currently receiving benefits from the Family Allowance Fund (CAF), representing 7,935 households in the region.
According to the ITSEE, 60.2% of residents receive support from the CAF. This figure is comparable to that seen in Guadeloupe (58.6%), but significantly higher than the French mainland average (47% of recipients). These benefits represent a substantial sum for the local economy: €57.6 million in 2024.
Beyond the number of recipients, the study also highlights the dependence of certain households on this support. Nearly 39% of households receiving benefits derive at least half of their income from social security payments. Single-parent families, who are the most affected, account for 38% of recipients on their own. Next come single recipients, who account for 33% of households, followed by couples with children (24%), whilst couples without children make up only 6% of recipients. Child
benefit is by far the most common: 56% of households receiving benefits claim it.
The Active Solidarity Income (RSA), designed to guarantee a minimum level of income for those without any, is received by 25% of benefit recipients. The activity bonus, an income supplement for low-income workers, is received by 24% of households.
These figures serve as an indicator for public authorities, who are called upon to adjust their social and family policies in line with local realities.
