Attitudes Médiations presents its programme to professionals
On Thursday 23 July, the Attitudes Médiations association organised a group information session for professionals in the island’s
medical and social care sector. The aim of the meeting was to present the services offered by the Guadeloupe-based organisation, which now runs drop-in sessions across the island.
Family mediation, parent-child meeting spaces, prison mediation and school mediation: Mirella Valerius, director of the Attitudes Médiations association, and Mylène Vincent, educational manager and family mediator, presented the main areas of work carried out by their organisation. Founded in 1999 and accredited since 2007, the organisation has been operating in
Saint-Martin since May 2026.
Offering tailored support
The meeting provided an opportunity to clarify how family mediation works, which, as the professionals pointed out, concerns ‘80 per cent of cases’ involving separation. This approach can also be used in conflicts relating to inheritance, the loss of independence of a loved one, or decisions regarding their care. The mediator, who is impartial and state-certified, helps each person to express their needs, identify obstacles and seek solutions. “On average, a mediation process takes place over three to four sessions,” explains Mirella Valerius. Following an initial free, no-obligation consultation, participants attend sessions lasting “between one and a half and two hours”. The cost of these mediation sessions varies according to each person’s income, ranging from “€2 per person to a maximum of €131 for those earning over €5,300 a month”. The organisers also pointed out that, in accordance with current legislation, in cases of proven domestic violence, individuals are not eligible for family mediation. However, the organisation can refer them to specialist agencies.
Maintaining the parent-child bond
The group session also provided an opportunity to present the parent-child meeting space. This facility provides a neutral and secure setting where children can meet with one of their parents or a close relative when relationships are strained. The aim is to maintain or gradually restore the bond, whilst always prioritising the child’s best interests. Meetings may be arranged by court order, at the parents’ request or on the advice of a professional. This support is free of charge for all families. In Saint-Martin, Attitudes Médiations runs drop-in sessions at the Maison des femmes. Remote mediation sessions can also be arranged in emergencies. A new information session for professionals is scheduled for 25 September.
