Organ donation: shall we talk about it?
As part of the National Bioethics Forum, the Ethical Reflection Group for Guadeloupe and the Northern Islands (EGERIN) is organising a public debate on organ donation. The aim is to inform, educate and open up discussion on the issues surrounding this sensitive topic.
In France, organ and tissue donation is governed by bioethics legislation. The three main principles are presumed consent (we are all organ and tissue donors unless we have expressed our refusal to donate during our lifetime by informing our relatives or by registering on the national refusal register), the voluntary nature of donation (the law prohibits any form of remuneration in return) and anonymity between the donor and the recipient.
For this new edition of the National Bioethics Forum, Guadeloupe has chosen to make organ donation the main theme of its local meetings. Amidst concerns, misconceptions and a lack of understanding of the system, this subject raises numerous ethical and societal questions, linked to solidarity among patients, cultural and religious values, and society’s perception of death.
In each territory, these discussions are organised by the ethical reflection forums through meetings, debates and workshops open to the public. They will take place in Saint-Martin on Wednesday 1 April at 5.30 pm at the Wataki Clinic in Concordia. Admission is free and the debate is open to all. Further information: www.eregin.com
