On 2 April, the Executive Council of the Collectivity of Saint Martin approved an application for a work permit for a foreign medical practitioner at the Louis Constant Fleming Hospital.

This decision concerns Dr Gbegnon Lionel Enock Dodji, a Beninese national, who is employed as an ‘acting resident’ in the General Surgery Department, within the ‘Anaesthesia – Surgery / Women, Maternity and Children’ unit. This status refers to a doctor performing duties similar to those of a resident (patient monitoring, participation in care and on-call duties), without being enrolled in the standard residency programme in France. His integration forms part of a training agreement linked to the Diploma of Specialised Medical Training (DFMS), in accordance with the decree of 25 October 2002 governing international cooperation initiatives by healthcare establishments.
Faced with a shortage of applications from French doctors, the hospital’s interim management has made use of this scheme to address the staff shortage in surgery.
The arrival of this trainee doctor should therefore help to support the department’s activities and improve the provision of healthcare in the region. The work permit has been granted for a period of twelve months.
