The 2026 edition of the “ “Languages, Arts and Cultures” is packed with events this week: a chess tournament, an exhibition, a citizenship day, sporting activities, choir, percussion and public speaking competitions…‬‭ ‬Pupils are immersed in a programme of cultural encounters, exchanges and discoveries.‬

The ‘In and Out’ exhibition, which was due to open last week at the West Indies Mall, will finally open this Tuesday at 5 pm; for members of the public who have not yet had the chance to admire the young pupils’ creations already on display, this is a cultural event not to be missed, as it is open to all. This Tuesday, 5 May, will also be Citizenship Day for secondary school pupils at the Grand Case Beach Club, focusing on the rights and duties of citizens, with the Deputy Public Prosecutor, the Commander of the Gendarmerie and the Prefect in attendance.

Sports enthusiasts are getting involved

The Centre for Excellence and Education through Sport (CEES) is launching an educational and civic initiative focused on the sea and the environment. On this occasion, CEES student-athletes will be taking part on Thursday 7 May from 3 pm to 5 pm at Soualiga College, addressing environmental issues, particularly those related to the protection of the coastline and the oceans. This initiative forms part of a broader approach to education through sport and culture, aimed at fostering in young people values of responsibility, respect for the environment and civic engagement. The initiative will also be highlighted through the CEES’s communication channels, to promote these young people’s commitment and, why not, inspire future careers.  For this is also the very purpose of this festival: to open up a world of possibilities and introduce the younger generation to a variety of fields. Discovering different professions is part of this. Last week, some discovered the work of sea rescuers and boat engine mechanics, and were introduced to international maritime signals with the SNSM, whilst others will this week explore careers in school catering. Another event in which the public can participate this time – or at least offer their encouragement – is the Neighbourhood Olympics, taking place during the Festival. On Friday 8 May, following the commemorative ceremony, 60 young people will set off from Marigot by bike to reach the schools in Sandy Ground and take part in various activities that will bring together young people from different neighbourhoods across the island. The CCISM will host the festival’s closing ceremony on Friday evening.
