Thank you to Clean Saint-Martin; shame on citizens of all stripes!

Once again, the Clean St Martin charity undertook to clean up part of the island on the first Sunday of the month. Three tonnes of rubbish were collected along the road leading from Baie Orientale to Le Galion.

On Sunday 5 July, volunteers from Clean St Martin were hard at work from 8 am, cleaning the southern part of Baie Orientale and the Route des Salines, starting from the Baie Orientale car park and following the track as far as the ‘Biodiversity Mangrove Nursery’.  To manage the waste more effectively, they took care to separate glass, plastic and cans from non-recyclable waste. In the end, after three hours of hard work, they collected around three tonnes of rubbish, mainly glass bottles discarded along the track and in the undergrowth.  At the end of the operation, the recyclable waste was placed in the appropriate bins so that it could be recycled. We can only thank this organisation for its commitment to keeping the area cleaner, as well as Tim, who was always on hand with his pick-up truck to lend a valuable helping hand, and the Nature Reserve, which also provided a pick-up truck. But how can such behaviour still be tolerated? How can this natural area, with a nursery of newly planted mangroves, inspire such incivility? How can we simply instil a sense of respect in everyone who uses this path?
