Signing of a partnership agreement between Verde SXM and the Nature Reserve
On Thursday 2 April, the waste management company Verde SXM and the Association for the Management of the Saint-Martin Nature Reserve (AGRNSM) signed a new partnership agreement. This renewal strengthens the cooperation between the two organisations.
The agreement signed by Verde SXM provides for the free collection of waste from the Nature Reserve. The company has therefore committed to providing practical support for the on-the-ground initiatives carried out by AGRNSM, by handling the waste collected during clean-up operations, up to a limit of 10 tonnes per year.
In return, the AGRNSM has pledged to promote this partnership through its communications channels.
Concluded for a period of one year, this agreement enables these private and public stakeholders to meet to discuss both current and future projects. Among these is the creation of a nursery at the entrance to the site of the current waste collection centre in order to revegetate part of the waste embankment.
A major challenge for the region
Beyond this agreement, Verde SXM and AGRNSM wish to highlight the challenges associated with waste management on the island. With a shared commitment to limiting the impact of human activities on natural environments, the two partners aim to raise public awareness of environmental issues and promote local initiatives.
“ “We process over 50,000 tonnes of waste every year; of this, only 25,000 tonnes are recycled in Saint Martin or Guadeloupe,” explains Maxime Arnal, director of Verde SXM. As a reminder, on the island, all non-recycled waste is landfilled.
This highlights the importance of sorting waste, particularly glass and plastic, in order to facilitate their recovery and sustainably reduce their impact on Saint Martin’s environment.
