Sargassum filaments have already appeared off the coast of the Caribbean islands. They are already multiplying in the Atlantic, and although strandings remain moderate this week, there is no doubt that they will increase in the coming weeks.
The season therefore seems to be starting early, which is now a recurring phenomenon due to global warming. Brown algae, usually present from spring (April) to early autumn (September), with a peak in summer (July), are arriving earlier and earlier.
The Collectivité has committed to installing diversion dams at Cul-de-Sac and the Poissons pond: three cascading sections designed to divert around 90% of the algae. In Quartier d'Orléans, a single dam should protect the population from the fumes of decomposing algae. These three dams, which have been under study since 2022, should finally be operational in May-June, before the peak of the season. To be continued!
