National Access to Justice Day: Drug trafficking in court
As part of the 9th National Day for Access to Justice (JNAD), the France Victimes association is organising a conference on the topic of drug trafficking on Friday 22 May from 2pm to 6pm at the Saint-Martin Magistrates’ Court.
Across the globe, drug networks are now undermining societies, fuelling violence, fostering corruption and giving rise to increasingly organised crime. The Caribbean island territories, situated on strategic international trafficking routes, are also facing these challenges. On 9 May, the French Navy once again intercepted a vessel in the Caribbean maritime zone and seized 104 bales of cocaine, amounting to 3,336 kg of the drug. This conference, open to the public subject to availability, will address drug trafficking through the testimony of Christine Saunier-Ruellan, an honorary magistrate, known for having been the investigating judge in charge of the so-called ‘Air Cocaine’ case. One of the most significant international drug trafficking cases involving France in recent years had seen surprising twists and turns and received extensive media coverage; so much so that Netflix decided to make a documentary about it entitled “Is There a Dealer on the Plane?”. Christine Saunier-Ruellan will share her experience as a magistrate dealing with the challenges of international drug trafficking and the judicial mechanisms employed in such complex cases. Through this event, the public will have the opportunity to discuss issues related to drug trafficking, its impact on local communities, and the work carried out by the justice system in tackling these criminal networks.
