National Sea Rescue Days: Sunday 28 June
A day to find out more, learn, have fun… and, above all, to support those who watch over our coasts all year round. To mark the 10th edition of the National Sea Rescue Days, the Saint-Martin SNSM station invites the public to join them on Sunday 28 June at Baie Orientale beach for a day of discovery, awareness-raising and free activities.
The SNSM volunteers, who work 365 days a year to ensure safety at sea, will be at the heart of this friendly event, which is open to everyone. Young and old alike will be able to discover life-saving techniques, learn how to raise the alarm at sea, or try their hand at tying nautical knots at the organisation’s stand. Several hands-on activities will also take place throughout the morning: introductory kayaking sessions in partnership with Tropical Ride (10.00–10.45) and rescue techniques (10.00–11.45), followed by a friendly competition. No special requirements are needed and everyone can take part, whatever their age. The highlight of the day will be a spectacular at-sea rescue demonstration taking place from 12 noon to 1 pm. Carried out under real-life conditions, it will give the public a better understanding of the situations lifeguards face throughout the year. All of this is free and open to everyone; the only charge is for lunch at Le Waï restaurant (€25 per person, including a glass of wine), but it’s well worth it as it’s a sardine feast, and all proceeds from the lunch will be donated in full to the Saint-Martin station to help fund its rescue, prevention and training missions.
Throughout the day, volunteers will be on hand to chat with the public, share their experiences and give an insight into their work. Visitors can also support the station by popping into the SNSM shop, where sales directly help fund operations. This is a wonderful opportunity to go behind the scenes of sea rescue, learn the right safety procedures, meet passionate volunteers and enjoy a time that is both useful, informative and friendly by the water’s edge.
