Colombier brings Saint-Martin’s heritage to life

Opening in late 2025 in the Colombier district, the Heritage Village offers an interactive immersion in the heritage of Saint-Martin. Supported by the association The Heritage and Ancestral Trails of Colombier, this cultural site of great historical significance aims to give a voice to those who built the island throughout history.

The Heritage Village is a place steeped in history, symbolic in more ways than one, where every detail has been carefully designed to preserve a memory. Twenty-six steps lead visitors to the entrance. This number is by no means insignificant: it symbolises the first twenty-six slaves who fled to the French part of the island in the hope of being freed. Behind this project lie years of research, the collection of testimonies, and a firm commitment to highlighting the people who have shaped Saint Martin throughout history, as well as the place of women in Saint Martinese society.

Here, each station has a name, a story

The site is organised around an open community space, featuring several activity stations. Each pays tribute to a figure who left their mark on the life of the Colombier community: Joshua, Miss Yahyah and many others, whose names and stories are thus passed on to new generations. Guides accompany visitors through these dedicated spaces: a traditional bread oven, a reconstructed traditional house or everyday objects… At each station, the guides do more than just explain: they demonstrate and pass on knowledge. From ancestral rituals to traditional songs, the guides bring daily life as it was once lived back to life, perpetuating the island’s collective memory. The preparation of bread or the famous Johnny Cake thus takes on its full meaning: behind every recipe lies a story, a practice, a fragment of the past that the Heritage Village is committed to reviving.

A heritage passed on, an island telling its story

Created by The Heritage and Ancestral Trails of Colombier in collaboration with Heritage Experience, the Heritage Village has a clear ambition: to make Saint Martin’s heritage an experience accessible to all, residents and tourists alike. The site is not limited to culinary skills: the guides also introduce visitors to local plants, their names and their traditional uses. A botanical garden is currently being developed. Clara Reyes, the site’s artistic director, explains during the tour the languages of yesteryear, as well as the anecdotes and paths taken by those who built the community. A hands-on, participatory approach that appeals to both children and adults, and is available in several languages. Set in the lush surroundings of the Spring Garden, the site is already establishing itself as a future cultural landmark on the island. An initiative funded by the Collectivité, which serves as a reminder that the history of Saint Martin also lies in the hands and voices of those who shaped it.
