Celebrated every year on 17 October and first held in 1987 on the forecourt of the Trocadéro in Paris by Father Joseph Wresinski, ‬founder of ATD Fourth World‭, ‬it has been officially recognised since 1992‭ ‬by the United Nations as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty‭.‬

Under the slogan ‘Unite for peace and human rights’, this day invites us to reflect on inequalities and ways of tackling them. This year’s theme, ‘Living on Earth’, focuses on access to decent housing, the right to a healthy environment and the various forms of precariousness, in both urban and rural areas. To mark the occasion, rallies, debates, round-table discussions and citizen-led initiatives are being organised in France and around the world.
Locally, the fight against precarious living conditions takes place throughout the year, often thanks to charities but also to organisations such as the Red Cross and ALEFPA-Le Manteau de Saint-Martin. Based in Marigot, this organisation plays a vital role in providing shelter and support to people in dire straits. In particular, it runs a Centre for Accommodation and Social Reintegration (CHRS) and provides support schemes for people who are homeless, socially excluded or victims of domestic violence.
Beyond providing emergency accommodation and social support, Le Manteau de Saint-Martin offers practical help to the most vulnerable people. The organisation also supports women who are victims of violence and their children, offering shelter and tailored support. Practical
information: Le Manteau de Saint-Martin is located on Route du Fort-Louis, in the premises of the former hospital in Marigot. The centre is open Monday to Friday, from 7.30 am to 5.30 pm.
