Meanwhile… in St Barth (press round-up)
From cultural events, local news, politics and initiatives by the Collectivité, there’s no shortage of news in Saint-Barthélemy. Here’s an overview of the stories making the rounds on our sister island this week.
Commemoration
This Friday, 9 October, the sister island will commemorate the abolition of slavery at Fort Gustav III (at the foot of the Fromager) from 5.00 pm, in the presence of the President of the Territorial Council and elected representatives of the Collectivité.
At school
‘Taste Week’ is being organised for the first time in the school canteen. This unique initiative will give pupils the chance to sample menus with a particular focus on Caribbean flavours. So, from 12 to 16 October, they will be offered the chance to try pork ragout, angola beans, chicken colombo or cod accras, as well as sea bream in Creole sauce, giromon velouté and sweet potato purée. Enjoy your meal, children.

Local news
Since last Sunday, Saint-Barth’s monthly market has resumed, heralding the start of the upcoming tourist season, even though, for the time being, residents make up the bulk of the visitors. The traders and craftspeople lining the entire length of Rue du Général de Gaulle offer visitors the chance every month to discover their products and creations, attracting a consistently large crowd from the early hours of the morning. A friendly and even musical atmosphere to (re)discover.

Event
Running alongside the Saint-Barth Gourmet Festival, which takes place from 9 to 15 November, is a celebration whose name now resonates throughout the Caribbean and beyond: the Caribbean Rum Awards. This is an opportunity to bring together distillers, bartenders, collectors and curious travellers from all over the world to attend one of the world’s most respected competitions for sugarcane-based spirits. Rare agricultural rums from Guadeloupe and Martinique, blends from Jamaica and new vintages from Barbados will be showcased during exceptional evenings at the island’s finest venues.

Local elected representatives
The Collectivité’s first vice-president, Marie-Hélène Bernier, has decided to step down from her role as chair of the hospital’s supervisory board. She had held this post since 2022 and devoted herself to it tirelessly, but she now cites several reasons that led her to take this decision (see details in the Journal de Saint-Barthélemy). She states, however, that she is fully satisfied with the work accomplished over the past four years, even though there is still much to be done.
