1 Roland 2Born on the island of St. Martin Sir Roland, a leading artist in the School of Caribbean Art, offers a unique view of his native West Indian culture as a “Plein Air” impressionist. He took the time to explain how he goes about painting to the group in the large room downstairs in which he has many beautifully framed paintings on display.
Visitors are allowed to wander through the lovely walled garden and Laura Richardson gives a lot of very interesting information of the old buildings that surround the garden. It is also where the artist’s forebear lived.
Upstairs is a large studio, again filled with gorgeous paintings. Here the artist gave visitors a very informative talk on light, prisms and colours and the way in which he sees things as he puts brush to canvas. He then set about painting a beautiful live model who was seated in a way that natural light came in from the wide open doorway. His mastery of multiple mediums includes painting on location in oil, watercolor, pastel and drawing in charcoal. His dry wit, obvious love of art and warmth he and his wife welcome visitors with make an outing to the gallery one that should not be missed.
Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands knighted Sir Roland Richardson in 2007 for his lifelong artistic contribution to his community.
He has also received a life-time achievement award from the French government for his work.
