Sailing : St. Barths Bucket Regatta

16 March 2017

Hot on the heels of the Heineken regatta comes the St. Barths Bucket Challenge.

The first Bucket Regatta was held in St. Barths in1995 – this is how it came to be. The first Bucket Regatta was organized in Nantucket, Massachusetts in August, 1986. “At a birthday celebration organized by Nelson Doubleday, several yacht owners participated in a spirited discussion about optimal yacht design and individual sailing prowess.  The following day, with only a night of preparation, seven sailing super-yachts raced on a hastily prepared 15 mile course on Nantucket Sound.” The prize for winning this race was simple – to undisputed super-yacht sailing bragging rights for the year – and with the sailor’s sense of humour a spare bucket was produced as the trophy and so the Bucket Regatta was born.
For over 30 years the world’s premier super-yacht sailing vessels, owners, crew and guests have raced this race in the true spirit of camaraderie.
The Nantucket Bucket racing continued between 1986 and 2001 end moved to Newport, Rhode Island 2002 to 2014.

In 1995 St. Barths hosted its first Bucket Regatta and every March since then with the fleet growing to 40 or so the super-yachts gather to compete for the St. Barths Bucket.
There is no other regatta of magnitude on the super-yacht racing circuit - the event organizers consider themselves the stewards of a most worthwhile tradition.
